John Robert Phillips Northage, Sr. / 9-12-1919 – 10-5-2009

John Robert Phillips Northage, 90, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.

He was born September 12, 1919, in Nottingham, England, to John Robert Northage and Isabella Anderson Phillips Northage, who both preceded him in death.

In 1947, he married the former Genevieve Troyer, who also preceded him in death in 1980. He then married Mary Jane Keller, July 11, 1987. She survives with his four children, Victoria (Glenn) Fisher of Sturgis, Mich., Joan (Clifford) Cooper of Granger, Ind., Jennifer (Stephen) Glick of Goshen and John R.P. Northage, Jr., of Chicago. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren along with a sister, Hannah Anderson Carlin of Hillsdale, Michigan. Another sister, Audrey Newman, died in 1997.

He had four stepchildren, Bob B. Lukens of Fairfax, Va., William H. Lukens of Frederick, Md., and Jayne A. Rozewicz and Margaret Turza, both of South Bend; 10 step-grandchildren, 19 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Northage was a member of Toastmasters International, Harris Prairie Church of Christ, The Presbyterian Players, The Society of Manufacturing Engineers, The National Rifle Association, the Edwardsburg Conservation Club and the Rotary Club. He was also a published poet. He was employed by Torrington Industries as a Design Engineer for 25 years.

Funeral services will be held Friday at Harris Prairie Church of Christ, 52153 Clover Trail, Granger, Ind., at noon. Friends will be received from 4 until 6 p.m. on Thursday at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka. Burial will follow the services Friday at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Harris Prairie Church of Christ or to the Sierra Club.
