ELKHART Ind. – More than 350 unemployed residents from the Michiana area attended a day long “boot camp” to help prepare for today’s tough job market. From resume writing tips to how to describe your skills at an interview, the Sept. 10th Employment Resource Expo was filled with helpful information. The event was free to all unemployed or anyone looking for job search tools.
In conjunction with the Michiana Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management, the event was organized by the Michiana Career Networking Association, an umbrella group for five area support groups for the unemployed. It was held at the Matterhorn Conference Center in Elkhart. Edwardsburg restaurant, Legends, donated two gift certificates for door prizes for the event.
The Employment Resource Expo featured numerous booths and seminars with area business leaders and employment experts offering insightful information for both professional and non-professional individuals who have been displaced, are entering the job market for the first time, or are looking at changing career paths. Assistance included resumé reviews and interviewing techniques, skills assessments, personal marketing tools, financial counseling services, employment and education resources. Area business leaders presented breakout seminars and attendees freely mingled and network with others during the event.
” We are glad that so many area residents took advantage of this opportunity to meet with others that can help them help themselves in their job search efforts,” said event organizer Pam Duncan.
Michiana Career Network Association also holds weekly meetings about the job market and job training.
The Michiana Career Network Association is an association of volunteers working together to help people find jobs. MCNA meetings are support groups for job seekers. Volunteer Leaders work with members to facilitate discussions, provide encouragement, and increase the skills required to effectively identify, target, and connect with employers seeking to fill open positions. MCNA meetings are open to all job seekers and, on occasion, to invited guests and speakers. For more information go to MCNA’s website at www.mymcna.com.
