Ferdinand G. “Fred” Schultz, Sr., 91, of East Main Street, Niles, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at West Woods of Niles, following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Niles, with the Rev. Carl Bassett of the church, officiating.
Committal will follow at West Lawn Cemetery, North Liberty, Ind.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 10, at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1918, in Frazee, Minn to Albert and Liffie (Arnhold) Schultz, and has lived n this area since 1957.
He was employed for many years by the Martin-Blad Farm, raising crops on thousands of acres in Saint Joseph County, Ind.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy.
He was a long-time member of American Legion Post No. 26, Niles.
He was a member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Niles.
He enjoyed ice fishing in area lakes, camping and woodworking, especially with young family members helping in his shop.
On June 23, 1979, in Niles, he married the former Elizabeth A. Rhode, who died on April 26, 2004.
He was also preceded in death by daughter, Ruth Carlson, Betty Jann and Sharon Probst and by his brother, Oscar Schultz and Edwald Schultz and by a sister, Erma Poole.
Surviving family includes his children, Linda (Ron) Spriggs of New Carlisle, Ind. and Ferdinand Schultz, Jr. of Anaheim, Calif.; step-children, Earl (Nancy) Nimtz, Don (Cindy) Nimtz and Bob (Renee) Nimtz, all of Niles and Sue (Dave) Lint of Oldsmar, Fla.; sons-in-law, Walter Jann and Jerry Probst and former daughter-in-law, Shirley Nimtz, all of Niles; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Albert “Ollie” Schultz, Jr. of Saint Paul, Minn. and Chester Schultz of South Bend, Ind. and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Niles.
